What are generic drugs?
Generics are drugs that are offered on the market when the patent protection for the original drug has expired.
The road ahead: A pharmaceutical manufacturer develops a new drug. Due to the extensive pharmaceutical research and elaborate clinical trials, the investments until the first approval are immense. For this reason, patents initially secure the original manufacturers the sole production and marketing of the respective active ingredients and drugs.
After patent protection has expired, other drug manufacturers, such as 1 A Pharma GmbH, are also allowed to produce and market drugs with the same active ingredient. Quality in the production of a generic drug has top priority for 1 A Pharma.
7 things you should know about generic drugs:
A generic drug contains the same active ingredient as the original.
Generics are drugs with active ingredients that have been tested, tried and tested over many years and have proven themselves in the treatment of patients.
The low price of a generic drug is possible mainly because it is no longer necessary to invest too large sums in research.
Strict legal requirements also apply to generic drugs. Within the scope of the approval, the flawless pharmaceutical quality must be proven, which is constantly monitored by the authorities.
Generics are often not only copies of the original preparations, but are offered as further developments: improved formulations, additional active ingredients and new dosage forms (e.g. juice instead of tablet, better divisibility, etc.).
Information on the active substance, strength, pharmaceutical form and company name of a generic product can be found on the packaging of the preparation. As a rule, they are already included in the product name: e.g. Paracetamol 500 - 1 A Pharma®.
After all, generics, with their low prices, help to relieve the financial burden on the healthcare system and bring drug costs back under control.
